An inquiry about having one's music played at Leftob to get
some public exposure reveiled a rare phenomenom: Someone capable of writing notable music and yet
successfully managing to spend years in obscurity, patiently improving and diversifying his
composition techniques, according to an ideal of sound. The inquiry of Chilean composer René
Muñoz Córdova soon laid the foundation to Obras Musicales (musical works
in English), his first release on Petcord summarising his years of research and refinery. Summary
should not be understood as concluding, but rather as an introduction to an individual approach
that is still under active development.
Despite being more a compilation than one organic work, Obras Musicales remains
remarkably consistent with its distinct characteristics. Drawing inspiration from
electroacoustic and contemporary classic, atonality and stochastic composition techniques and
merging these influences with aspects of more mainstream orientated electronic music variants,
René Muñoz Córdova isolates sonic events, extends and integrates them into
a new context.
Speech synthesis and vocoder samples drowning in echoes collide with chopped and
post-processed instruments, feedback and field recordings describing quickly morphing sceneries.
Obras Musicales illustrates the plausibility of the paradox like dehumanised man-machine voices philosophising on the inner light, the origin of life and overcoming personal limits during one's travelling in space-time. There is a deeper meaning in the metaphor of a monotonic life, overly regulated by conventions, peer pressure and uniformity. The individuum realising the necessity of a revolt, even if it happens unnoticed through seclusion and compensation in arts. In his work, René Muñoz Córdova maintains a striking balance of intuition and reflection and a sense for clarity, which makes listening to Obras Musicales a most pleasant experience.
