Opposite approaches characterise the latest work of Chilean composer René Muñoz
Córdova on Petcord, la arquitectura sónica de Amacelin & Luyelval, which features
the two distinct compositions Amacelin and Luyelval.
Amacelin contains variations on several phrases of music instruments embedded into an electroacoustic
context. Those phrases are less of a live performance, let alone meant as leading voices, but treated as just
another chopped sound source being post-processed and reassembled. René Muñoz Córdova's
deconstruction varies greatly, however:
Seamless edits following an almost natural flow alter with harsh, stuttering cuts, often correlated to the
abrupt changes of soft and loud passages. Continuously flowing tone sequences collide with fragmented parts,
sometimes even outright silence. Nevertheless, the movements of Amacelin follow a traditional treatment of
varying and combining phrases, just within a contemporary context.
Luyelval, by contrast, is a monolithic work with prevailing stochastic progressions (in the sense of
Iannis Xenakis). A hovering drone
serves as background for flickering grainy sounds, seemingly involved in an infinite dialogue via their
spatial placement. Tension and crackling noise which randomly change alignment and density, describing a
constant influx of thoughts and stimuli. Looking at the greater picture, however reveals the layers of sound
are not randomly distributed, but form a balanced contrasting structure that follows the signature of human
selection. Thus, despite the absense of a clearly defined tonality, Luyelval still shares characteristics of a
musical work and demonstrates that to René Muñoz Córdova, it's the distribution of contrasts
that define a composition, not a limited set of tonal intervals or algorithms.

In case your favourite browser happens to exhibit exactly that behaviour, simply right click the link, and then a context menu should appear that offers something like "Save as" or "Save location as".
