39 68 99 09 is the title of Stig Inge Oy's first release for the Petcord netlabel and refers to years Polish
artist Maciej Miskiewicz - the force behind Stig Inge Oy - considers significant for the Western civilisation.
Each of these is represented by a separate movement with distinct sound characteristics, but where exactly the
significance lies is left open to the listener, though some choices may be more likely than others.
Distant drones that turn into depressing silence as they fade away. Barely do they interact and seem to outline
a feeling of hopelessness as a common thread of '39. Eventually, a motif and more defining harmonics occur but they
seem too faint to overcome the pall of fear hanging over the scenery. A sombre piano figure with accompanying glassy
drones switches over to '68. Contrasted is this motif with a vibrant cello figure. The feeling of discomfort makes
room for seemingly inescapable sadness, although one that leaves no doubt about its certainty.
99' picks up a motif of '39 and turns it into an electroacoustic string quartet with gnawing tremolo and interspersed
with hectic pizzicato lines. Fragmented like a train of thought, they are swallowed up by a distorted noise loop. The
last part '09 portraits an seemingly unsuspicious environment until a nervous piano motif with drony strings in unisono
capture the listener's attention again. They lead to a finale with continuously raising drums which seem to outline
monotony by structuring time with machine-like precision and uniformity. At the same time, the final does not resolve
the tension, but fades into uneasy silence again.
Stig Inge Oy leaves no doubt about the characteristics of those significant events. An inescapable mixture of tension and desperation, paired with a confronting forthrightness that seems to be at odds with today's tendency of drowning dissent in a sea of politically correct trivialities, is what characterises 39 68 99 09. But that exactly is what makes this work stand out from others.
