If there is a common thread to Philippe Nore's approach to arts then it is efficiency and conciseness. Sometimes,
everything about an idea can be told within a matter of seconds, yet this does not signify any lack of substance. The
French artist not only manages to successfully express his ideas in such a way, but also to embed those bits and pieces
into a larger unit. His debut for the Petcord Netlabel, Quinze (which is French for Fifteen) consists, as
the name already hints at, of 15 pieces plus another longer piece that serves as closure and is consequently titled
X, in order not to interfere with the main sequence. Ironically, the end once was meant as the beginning, the
means to an end so to speak, and remains the only piece with a reference to tonality.
The electroacoustic structures are dominated by rhythms, pulses and sequences. Squeaking soundwaves, low sinus bass tones and crackling artifacts of reassembled tone fragments create a rather minimal texture and provide an unique drive and liveliness one would not expect from genuinely experimental electronic. These patterns successfully replace the function of melodies by means of their interaction and a broad range of frequencies colliding at each other never leaves the impression of boredom or unease. Perhaps it is the paradox of irregularity paired with purely digitally created sound events, the objection to electronic music being equal to repetition that makes "Quinze" sound differently.
