[pc0910-02] Fabio Keiner - Without Words Without Silence

Fabio Keiner - Without Words Without Silence - front cover Without words, without silence, the title of Fabio Keiner's fourth album refers to a rather unfortunate period in life where ambiguities in relationships to other persons lead to misunderstandings and eventually complete silence. How someone's worries are the result of another one's thoughtlessness and how people who would get along fine cease communicating with each other because they make unrealistic assumptions about themselves. Consequently, it is the negation of the two characteristics words (intonation and lyrics) and silence (not to speak up) and contains much of the tension typical of uncertainty.

There are some curiosities in Evening Evocations like eerie overtone voices embedded into dissonant tone clusters creating an unreal atmosphere between a hallucination and the awakening within a dream. Despite the dark and gloomy mood, there is a considerate variety in sound ranging from dampened voices, resonant drones, strings and low frequency rumble with a stronger focus on soundscapes with cinematic qualities. Threnos, named after the wailing over the death of a beloved person in ancient Greece, also contains a hint at Krzysztof Penderecki's composition of the same name, which was dedicated to the victims of Hiroshima. Again, like in the previous composition, the focus is not on the sadness itself, but on fear and tension of an unresolved conflict without any chance of resolution or closure.

Fabio Keiner's exploration of the darkness, the unknown depth of the pain of a tormented soul has been a constant throughout his work. On the other hand, it is the very darkness that highlights the few bright spots in the distance that guide one's way through the night.
