[pc2011-10] NP - Couleur ASCII

NP - Couleur ASCII - front cover Philippe Nore's third album for Petcord, Couleur ASCII, deepens the tendencies first found in his previous work Nahash to expand in both time and sound, as well as to solidify his compositions' structures. On the one hand there are the manic rhythmic structures of stuttering looping noise, which on the other hand are contrasted with elegiac drones that dissolve any notion of time. This creates some kind of ambiguity, a swing reaching out to either extreme of the spectrum, sometimes even unexpectedly switching its state during an ongoing exposition.

Couleur ASCII avoids any connotations with actual events and insists on its right to exist without any explicit purpose by selecting titles that are not exactly suitable for directing the listeners' thought patterns into a particular direction. Sufficiently anonymised as hexadecimal entities, each of these compositions may represent a colour code with its associated emotional qualities or associations, each of them establishing a microcosm of their own. Therefore the listener is encouraged to further randomise the order before settling for one of the 87,178,291,200 possible combinations.
